What material are brackets made from
The brackets are made from Cast iron. Cast iron is extremely strong and therefore makes it suitable for heavy-duty shelving and larger surfaces, while providing a textured finish adding authentic character being functional as well as decorative,
How much weight can the brackets hold
There is no simple answer to this as it depends on several things, the size of the bracket, the number of brackets used, the wall type and the quality of the installation. Cast iron brackets can support significant loads when properly installed.
Wall fixings are just as important as the brackets themselves, we do supply wall and shelf screws, however we do not supply wall plugs – you will require different wall plugs depending on the structure brackets are being fitted on.
Masonry walls require appropriate plugs and fixings
Stud walls may need shelves aligned with studs or reinforced battens
Fixings should be suitable for both bracket and wall material
Please take care to avoid piercing pipes or cables when fitting brackets – if in doubt please consult a qualified tradesman
What size bracket do I need
Selecting the correct size is important for both safety and appearance. We would recommend that the bracket should support at least two-thirds of the shelf depth. A bracket that is too large could look out of proportion and one which is too small may not support the shelf properly, while
Using more brackets can distribute the weight more evenly across the shelf and using the correct size bracket for the shelf will also reduce any cantilever effects. Smaller brackets may look discreet but often do not provide the required support.
How far apart should brackets be placed
Spacing is important to keeping shelves strong, stable and level. If brackets are too far apart, this can increase stress on both the brackets and shelf particularly over longer spans causing the shelf to sag or even collapse.
As a common rule, place brackets every 24 inches(60cms) -36 inches (90cms) inches for standard shelving. For heavier loads, thicker shelves or softer wall materials, closer spacing is usually better.
We recommend leaving an equal distance, wherever possible, from either end of the shelf to provide balance. However this will change based on personal choice and the size of the shelf
Can the brackets be used outdoors
Cast Iron is susceptible to rust, in cases where the bracket may be exposed to moisture, we recommend applying a suitable finish such as lacquer or varnish and oiling will also provide a level of protection. We place protection on the brackets for transport and this may show on hands when opening the bracket – if this is the case please use dry cloth to wipe prior to installation
The black finish brackets have been powder coated to reduce risk of rusting and therefore a good option of external use
